Being an internally displaced person from the ongoing Cameroon Anglophone crisis with medical skills in Yaounde, I came in contact with another displaced woman with five kids the eldest no older than 5 years. I tried to inquire about her situation in Yaounde and she informed me that of the 5 kids, 3 belonged to her, and 2 belong to her late sister who passed away due to Malaria, and to the lack of finance to consulting a medical doctor. A death that could have been prevented with as little as 5000frs CFA had the disease been tackled in time. With my medical skills and experiences as a clinical biologist, together with my very good friend who is a medical doctor, we decided to start a platform to meet the health needs of internally displaced persons, refugees, and very low-income persons in Yaounde. These people mostly suffer from preventable diseases such as intestinal worms, cholera, typhoid, malaria, and genital tract infections which can be easily handled with out-of-the-box thinking and prevent the death of many vulnerable persons. They often resort to auto medication, most at times, not knowing what they are treating and thereby worsening the state of their illnesses. This realization led to the birth of the African Initiative for Health and Research Promotion (AIHRP). AIHRP provides timely, high-quality pro bono health care services to our target population. Specifically, this initiative now offers free medical consultations, subsidized medication, and laboratory tests to victims of conflict and very low-income persons living in the slums of Yaounde.
Our long-term plan is to expand this initiative in all ten regions of Cameroon and Africa as a whole, to impact the lives of millions of people.
