Africa, a continent known for its natural beauty and rich diversity, is facing an urgent crisis. Despite contributing less than 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, Africa is grappling with the harsh realities of climate change, leaving its people and ecosystems vulnerable.
In Africa, extreme weather events like heatwaves, heavy rains, floods, tropical cyclones, and relentless droughts have become all too common, disrupting lives and economies. It's a daunting challenge that cannot be ignored.
Ambassador Josefa Leonel Correia Sacko of the African Union Commission acknowledges the stark reality: "Africa, like other regions, has come to terms with the reality that climate change is already happening."
Agriculture, the backbone of Africa, sustains over 55% of its workforce. But climate change has taken a toll, reducing agricultural productivity by 34% since 1961. This decline is higher than any other region in the world, leading to a staggering increase in annual food imports, from $35 billion to $110 billion by 2025.
The consequences of inaction are profound. Loss and damage costs in Africa due to climate change are projected to range from $290 billion to $440 billion, depending on the degree of warming. This is a staggering burden that we cannot afford to bear.
Amidst this crisis, African women stand as both unsung heroes and silent sufferers. They are responsible for 80% of food production and over 60% of agricultural labor. Yet, gender inequality denies them access to vital resources and opportunities.
As climate change intensifies, women are forced to travel farther and work harder to secure essentials like firewood and water, exposing them to risks and violence. Their unequal status exacerbates the challenges they face, making them more vulnerable to climate impacts.
Taking Action in Kenya's Rift Valley
In the heart of Africa, we are taking meaningful steps towards a brighter, more resilient future. In Kenya's Rift Valley, we have embarked on a mission to create change.
Our Actions:
- Tree Planting: We are sowing the seeds of change by planting trees, fighting deforestation, and restoring ecosystems. Trees not only reduce carbon emissions but also provide livelihoods for local communities.
- Climate-Smart Agriculture: Empowering farmers with climate-smart agricultural practices is crucial for adaptation. Sustainable farming enhances food security and minimizes our carbon footprint.
How You Can Help:
You are a vital part of this journey. Your support can transform lives and landscapes:
