Being a woman means a baby is born and identify as female. When they grow up and are liberal to make vital decisions concerning their gender, some come to that point when they choose to identify as female. There is nothing much to it, just the physical aspects of the human body.
What happens next, you may ask:
The woman understands the roles and duties already set aside for her, following each one to the core. Sadly, society demarcates the path she is supposed to navigate. They have already decided on her social and academic future, which looks bleak from where she stands. There is little she can say or object. To top it all, they barricade her interests with heavy norms and beliefs that ring loudly in her ears, “You cannot do this, you have no strength to do this, it is shameful to do this, or this role is for men’’.
While all this is happening, the woman is watching closely, learning from her life experience. Her mind is slowly opening to new ideas. She sees beyond her current state and realizes there is more out there. The world will soon hear her voice. That inclining voice inside her is determined to live beyond the words “NO, please wait, not now, you cannot do this”. Fear slowly melts away. She is no longer afraid to fold her sleeves and muck in. Society does not realize that when they continue to say NO, the woman carves her path, taking hesitant steps and tumbling down the narrow and thorny path that leads to her ultimate victory.
Her voice echoes in the distant field, calling for her story. They muffled it under suppressiveness, but she groans loudly still. Each day she takes on the impossible head-on, bulldozing her way to the highest seat. The woman understands that she is wiser than what they perceive of her. She laughs at the world and winks at it knowingly. Now she knows the wait is over, and the path is slowly clearing for her. She takes her first, second and many more bold steps with her head held up high. She makes her way to the front of the line and demands more.
She births men and women who will continue in her legacy. She takes on this enormous responsibility with the uttermost love and care. Her mind still yearns to walk the path society has forbidden her. She learns a new skill, juggling, a thing she can do effectively. A few months later, it’s back to business. She shakes off the dust and jumps back to her plugging, breaking barriers and finding her voice.
Life hasn’t been a perfect picture. Her bruised and battered face tries to rekindle a smile. Her long wait has brought little she can celebrate. She waits anyway. Women know this one thing, that rejection, disappointment and seclusion marred their history, yet they have painted their future with hope.
Life hasn’t been a perfect picture. Her bruised and battered face tries to rekindle a smile. Yesterday, her face met with the pounce of an angry fist. Today, her swollen cheeks stained the walls. The next day is different. Her smile hurts, but her heart bubbles for a new story. She surprises everyone with her continued quest for freedom. There is a voice that wants to burst out from within her. She holds it in steady, waiting for the right moment. She will be free.
Her long wait has brought little she can celebrate, but she waits anyway. Her letters sit at the bottom of the pile that nobody has touched. One thing is for sure, women have never been tired of knocking even though the odds are against them. Her letter will find its way to the top. They can curb her to a corner where she will cower for a while, but she crawls back to the door and knocks again.
Women know this one thing, that rejection, disappointment and seclusion marred their history, yet they have painted their future with hope. A hope that illuminates every dark corner society has placed them. Every woman fighting for another is building a wall that will stand for many generations, upholding the amplified voices that will finally yield Victory. I am a Woman on a Mission.
