Americans have reached a new high--in body weight. According to a CDC survey of 400,000 adults, 26.1% of us were obese (not just overweight) in 2008, up from 25.6% a year earlier. The \"biggest\" states, with obesity rates of 30% or higher, were Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. The leanest state, with an obesity rate below 20%, was Colorado. Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above; overweight is a BMI of 25 to 29.9.
