A LETTER TO A FATHER

Dear Father,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I got to hear from mama that you are planning to marry me off to Mzee Saitabau- a man too old, a man I should call my grandfather- where has the love gone? The love that I felt when I came to this world; the love that you showed me when I was growing up, the promises you gave me of a bright future, the love that you showered us with even when there was no food on the table?

Where? Where has the love gone?

You brought me up in your culture, a culture that is now mine, a culture that is the pride of Africa, a culture that many emulate, a culture rich in heritage, a culture that when sold I think no one can buy because of how expensive it is, a culture that is represented worldwide even by people who do not belong in it, all I am trying to say dad is that I know all about our customs, but where is the pride in the traditions. I know nothing about marriage but I know something about love because you brought us up in love. Why now? Why do you want to steal my childhood away from me? Why does it have to be me, dad?

I have been the best of kids you have, not that I am saying you give away Metian or Natilikia, I am just saying that we are kids, your kids. Empower us so that we provide for you when we grow up, you do not have to value property more than you value your own BLOOD. Change your perception and view of us and you will never regret.

We are just children and not ready to be wives.

EDUCATE ME NOW, I BETTER YOUR LIFE TOMORROW
