A journey to the World through its women’s Pulse

After finishing my BA in international and European studies I found myself working with women who want to get involved in politics. My story on World Pulse started when a friend and colleague of mine forwarded me the program telling me that it would be perfect for me as I dealt with women issues. As a young woman who takes pride in her Albanian – Greek education and full of enthusiasm I joined immediately as the idea of talking with women around the world who might have the same interests with me fascinated me. I started to read profiles and posts trying to connect with women who might have interests in politics and I found some. But to tell the truth it was more that that, my hidden feeling was that even those women may have no interest in politics right now they might have in the future. Since most of the women out there have overcome difficult situations, have managed to study, create families, get involved in their communities, educate and help others, they can also participate in decision making and shape the future of their nations tomorrow.

Reading about other women stories on World Pulse has opened to me a new world, as a global diary where women fearlessly take the floor and speak up about their difficulties, their obstacles and what have made them the persons of today. And in this journey I share the same vision with all the women out there, a vision of a societal change for a better future and a fairer society where women have an active role to play. Because the problems that our societies face do not differ much from country to country, on the contrary are problems of humankind which in Keynes words would be how «to combine three things: economic efficiency, social justice and individual liberty». Social justice concerns all aspects of life. In Plato’s terms a good society is a just society. In such a society people call for a more fair distribution of wealth, better social services and better education. Government on the other hand most of the times is confronted with distrust and scepticism because sometimes it fails to ensure the rule of law and to lay the ground for the establishment of a more fair economic growth. Along with that, individual liberty as the very basic right of people to express their opinions freely is a key value of democracy. At the same time individuals entitled to this liberty also form the basis of civil society and they should strengthen it by participating in public life.

To sum up, societal change is a combination of many factors, both economic and political. Women should be active part of this change and play an important role in this direction by encouraging people to participate in public life.
I feel this is both a challenge and a vision for all of us!
