20th Anniversary of the Democracy Uprising in Burma

The Portland Burmese community cordially invites you to an event honoring the 20th anniversary of the 8-8-88 uprising in Burma, to be held on August 9, 2008 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

On August 8, 1988 thousands marched in the streets of Burma to demand freedom and democracy from the Burmese military junta. At least 3,000 protesters were gunned down in the streets by government soldiers, and thousands more were driven into exile.

On August 8, 2008, it will be 20 years to the day since those tragic protests. The people of Burma continue to struggle for freedom and democracy, and continue to sacrifice their lives and their homes for the cause.

The Portland Burmese community will gather on Saturday, August 9th, 2008 to remember the protests of 1988 and to honor those who gave their lives in pursuit of freedom.

The event will feature talks by Burmese community leaders and activists, Burmese food, and traditional Burmese music and dance performances.

The event is free and open to everyone, but donations are welcome, and t-shirts will be available for purchase. Donations will benefit Cyclone Nargis victims in Burma.
