The Architect of the Diaspora for Women in Europe

To understand the story of Joy Wanjiru Machugu-Zenz is to understand the modern story of the African woman in the diaspora - a narrative woven from threads of displacement, resilience, and the radical act of building a home far from home. Today, Joy stands as one of the most prominent diaspora female diespora leaders in Europe, guiding a network of over 10,000 women. Yet, the foundations of her sprawling empire were not laid in a corporate boardroom, but in the quiet, isolating winters of Germany, born from a simple human longing for connection and a stubborn refusal to shrink or feel small.

The Winter of Isolation andThe Genesis of a Massive Movement

In the early 2000s, Joy Zenz left the familiar warmth and vibrant rhythms of Kenya for Germany. Like millions of immigrants before her, she arrived with dreams, ambitions, and a willingness to adapt. What she did not anticipate was the profound, heavy weight of cultural isolation. Living in Germany, Zenz looked around and struggled to find a reflection of herself. The mainstream European media often painted a monolithic, tragic picture of African women - relegating them to stories of struggle, dependency, or victimhood. Zenz knew a different truth. She knew that African women were inherently entrepreneurial, resourceful, and brilliant. But scattered across different European cities and divided by language barriers, these women were invisible to one another. Driven by a desire to cure her own loneliness and to see "what other Africans were doing in Europe," Zenz took a small but revolutionary step in 2008. Armed with basic digital tools, she launched a simple webpage. It was designed to act as a digital lighthouse, casting a modest beam into the European diaspora to see if anyone would signal back. The response was an echo that grew into a roar.

From Digital Lighthouse to Global Network, and The Rise of AWE

What began as a personal quest for community quickly outgrew its digital borders. African women from the UK, France, Switzerland, and beyond began tuning into Zenz's platform. They were doctors, academics, artists, and market traders, all hungering for a space where they could celebrate their dual identities without apology. Recognising the immense potential at her fingertips, Zenz formalised this digital gathering space into African Women in Europe (AWE). Under her leadership as Founder and CEO, AWE evolved from a casual forum into a powerhouse networking and empowerment platform. By 2016, the movement had shifted from the digital realm to the physical world in spectacular fashion. The landmark AWE Düsseldorf Conference that year became a vibrant tapestry of African textiles, business suits, and languages. It proved that diaspora women were no longer just seeking integration into European society; they were ready to lead. As the years progressed, Zenz systematically dismantled the barriers holding diaspora women back. In 2018, she expanded the brand into a comprehensive ecosystem designed to uplift the whole woman. She launched AWE Events to gather minds, AWE Books to document and publish their untold stories, the AWE Academy for professional upskilling, and the AWE GPS Mentorship Program to ensure that established African professionals were pulling the next generation up the corporate and entrepreneurial ladder.

The Wealth Bridge For Redefining Financial Empowerment

As AWE grew, Zenz's sharp entrepreneurial instincts revealed a deeper, more systemic issue affecting her community. Many African diaspora women were working tirelessly in Europe, sending money home via remittances, but failing to build sustainable, generational wealth. Navigating the legal complexities, bureaucratic red tape, and investment landscapes of both Europe and Kenya was a minefield. Zenz refused to let her community remain financially disenfranchised. In 2020, amidst a global pandemic that threatened economic stability worldwide, she founded the AWE Diaspora SACCO (Savings and Credit Cooperative). Registered formally in Kenya, this cooperative acted as a trusted financial bridge. The SACCO allowed diaspora women to pool their resources, access affordable credit, and invest in secure real estate, agriculture, and business ventures back home. By providing structure and financial literacy, Zenz transformed sentimental remittances into strategic, wealth-building investments, giving these women real economic sovereignty.

Borderless Futures While Championing African Trade

Never one to rest on her laurels, Zenz soon looked toward the macro-economic horizon. With the introduction of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) - the largest free trade area in the world - she saw a historic window of opportunity. However, she noticed a gaping chasm between elite policy-making and the grassroots women who actually drive African commerce. In 2021, Zenz launched African Women in Trade (AfWITrade / AWT). The philosophy was simple yet profound: if African women are the backbone of continental trade, they must be the ones to profit from its formalisation. Through AfWITrade, Zenz created a pipeline connecting female entrepreneurs in Africa directly with buyers, distributors, and partners in the European diaspora and global markets. She began organising international trade exhibitions, taking the vibrant flavours, textiles, and innovations of African women to the global stage, proving that charity is no substitute for fair, empowered commerce.

A Legacy Refined

Joy Zenz's journey from a homesick immigrant searching for community in Germany to a global economic matriarch is a testament to the power of self-determination. Her tireless work has completely rewritten the narrative of the African diaspora woman from one of isolation to one of immense economic and cultural influence. Her impact has not gone unnoticed. In 2026, her decades of dedication culminated in being shortlisted as a finalist for the prestigious AfBC African Women in Business Excellence Award in London, cementing her status as a titan of international enterprise. Joy Zenz did not just find her community in Europe; she built it, funded it, educated it, and traded with it. In doing so, she created a blueprint for how diaspora populations can uplift their adopted countries while fueling the economic renaissance of their homelands.
